Summary

The year is 1969, and the Bayleen Island Folk Fest is abuzz with one name: Jesse Reid。 Tall and soft-spoken, with eyes blue as stone-washed denim, Jesse Reid's intricate guitar riffs and supple baritone are poised to tip from fame to legend with this one headlining performance。 That is, until his motorcycle crashes on the way to the show。

Jane Quinn is a Bayleen Island local whose music flows as naturally as her long blond hair。 When she and her bandmates are asked to play in Jesse Reid's place at the festival, it almost doesn't seem real。 But Jane plants her bare feet on the Main Stage and delivers the performance of a lifetime, stopping Jesse's disappointed fans in their tracks: A star is born。

Jesse stays on the island to recover from his near-fatal accident and he strikes up a friendship with Jane, coaching her through the production of her first record。 As Jane contends with the music industry's sexism, Jesse becomes her advocate, and what starts as a shared calling soon becomes a passionate love affair。 On tour with Jesse, Jane is so captivated by the giant stadiums, the late nights, the wild parties, and the media attention, that she is blind-sided when she stumbles on the dark secret beneath Jesse's music。 With nowhere to turn, Jane must reckon with the shadows of her own past; what follows is the birth of one of most iconic albums of all time。

Shot through with the lyrics, the icons, the lore, the adrenaline of the early '70s music scene, Songs in Ursa Major pulses with romantic longing and asks the question so many female artists must face: What are we willing to sacrifice for our dreams?

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This story had so much potential but it wasn’t it for me。 I didn’t like the writing style and there were too much characters who did not make sense in the story。 I loved Jany Q, strong and independent woman and i wished better for her and Jesse。 Overall i loved the 70’s/island/band vibes!

4。5/5 I really enjoyed this book。 It's like if daisy jones met the east coast for a bit。 I also think that jesse may have had some inspo from a Massachusetts great, James Taylor。 I didn't want to stop reading。 I love the quinn clann, I want to be in it。 Also that last chapter made me so happy even if it wasn't what I expected。 4。5/5 I really enjoyed this book。 It's like if daisy jones met the east coast for a bit。 I also think that jesse may have had some inspo from a Massachusetts great, James Taylor。 I didn't want to stop reading。 I love the quinn clann, I want to be in it。 Also that last chapter made me so happy even if it wasn't what I expected。 。。。more

I read this book in one day and while I enjoyed it, I dont think I wouldve finished it if I had spread it out for a lot longer。 This was a cool idea but I didnt like the chemistry between Jesse and Jane。 All the characters needed to be fleshed out more and they needed much better dialogue。 A lot of the events had me so confused (like the random trip to greece) but overall it was a fun read。 Just needed a better editor I think。It’s very reminiscent if Daisy Jones and the Six and I’m glad I read i I read this book in one day and while I enjoyed it, I dont think I wouldve finished it if I had spread it out for a lot longer。 This was a cool idea but I didnt like the chemistry between Jesse and Jane。 All the characters needed to be fleshed out more and they needed much better dialogue。 A lot of the events had me so confused (like the random trip to greece) but overall it was a fun read。 Just needed a better editor I think。It’s very reminiscent if Daisy Jones and the Six and I’m glad I read it right now before the show comes out in two weeks since it got me in the mood to watch it。 。。。more

Huge Daisy Jones vibes, but very much it’s own story。 I read this super fast and honestly couldn’t really put it down。 I just wish it hadn’t been third person perspective but overall very very good, would recommend。

A fun book about rock and roll! It wasn't my favorite ever, I felt like there wasn't enough of the LA culture included。 I didn't love the family history and how much time was spent on that, it just seemed unnecessary。 I enjoyed reading it, just wasn't quite 5-star-worthy read for me。 A fun book about rock and roll! I’m adding every book that sounds even remotely similar to Daisy Jones and the Six to my tbr rn (:

Of course I love the era this book takes place in, but even more so, I love the themes this book explores: music, songwriting, love, addiction, sexism, music industry standards, and mental health。 Jane and Jesse are interesting characters from their personalities, thoughts and opinions, struggles, to their beliefs。 Like Daisy Jones & The Six, this book shows the twists and turns that glamorous lifestyles, the music industry, and love takes one through。

I liked this I’m a sucker for books about fictional musical artists in the 60s-70s so no surprise but it was good and I’d recommend particularly for a summer read。 I couldn’t get that tweet about made up song lyrics in books (cringe) out of my head, but don’t let that put you off hehe

What I would do to get to hear the music in this book! I enjoyed every aspect of this book, and by the end I really felt like these characters could be real and all I want is to own “Ursa Major” on vinyl。 If you are a fan of Daisy Jones and looking for more 70s music to fill your bookshelves, don’t sleep in this book!

Gisèle Nepolello

Too much Joplin not enough originality, and terrible ending。

If you loved TJR’s Daisy Jones & the Six, you’ll love this book。 A cast of powerful female characters and a dark look into the music industry in the 70’s。 The final chapter absolutely got me and was an unexpected end to a fantastic story。 An excellent summer read。

Well, this was fun。 I'm aware that this book has many flaws, especially the fact that the author can't use a verb other than "said" for all the dialogue。 However, it managed to take me away from the real world for a couple of hours and sometimes that's all you need from a book。 As a hopeless romantic, this book didn't deliver all the clichés I wanted, but I made peace with the ones I did get。 A good one to read in between heavier books as a palate cleanser。 PS: try not to see Jesse and Jane as S Well, this was fun。 I'm aware that this book has many flaws, especially the fact that the author can't use a verb other than "said" for all the dialogue。 However, it managed to take me away from the real world for a couple of hours and sometimes that's all you need from a book。 As a hopeless romantic, this book didn't deliver all the clichés I wanted, but I made peace with the ones I did get。 A good one to read in between heavier books as a palate cleanser。 PS: try not to see Jesse and Jane as Sam Claflin and Riley Keough, I dare you。 This book gives soooooo many Daisy Jones & the Six vibes。 。。。more

I didn't have high expectations for this book and was looking forward to imagining myself in the 60's era。 But… I don't know, I didn't find the writing style very amusing nor rich, like everything was happening so fast and the characters were just flat。 I wasn't rooting for anyone, and the plot was a bit predictable in some parts。 I felt nothing for the characters, nor was I involved in their thoughts that I could relate to in any way。On the other hand, despite not liking Jane for being extremel I didn't have high expectations for this book and was looking forward to imagining myself in the 60's era。 But… I don't know, I didn't find the writing style very amusing nor rich, like everything was happening so fast and the characters were just flat。 I wasn't rooting for anyone, and the plot was a bit predictable in some parts。 I felt nothing for the characters, nor was I involved in their thoughts that I could relate to in any way。On the other hand, despite not liking Jane for being extremely self-centered throughout the book, I was able to "forgive" this trait because of her backstory。 I liked the ending, I liked how the relationship suffered a twist。 The only thing that I may agree with one of the characters is Elsie (the granny!) when she refers that the mental health and its diseases shouldn’t be labelled as a stigma。 。。。more
